2020 has been a bitch. I think we can all agree. Musicians across the world have had to completely cut themselves off from what they love to do the most – play live. But within this curse there have been a lot of blessings. The time off has afforded many artists the opportunity to polish and finish some personal projects, and that is exactly what Cape Town legend Ric Shields (you may remember him from such bands as Last One alive and Atlantic South) has done.

In his own words: “This musical project was conceived when Ric Shields began suffering from depression. As the world within grew more complex and uncertain, he sought a way to contain this dark new energy, to give it form, and music became the receptacle. Many years later, Sundergeist emerges into the outside world, seeking to bind those who are willing to listen through catharsis and the communion of our shared experiences of life.”

Having spoken to him a few weeks before the release, I could sense Ric’s excitement about what was coming, and now having listened to the album I can fully understand what he was so giddy about. Hindsight is a tour-de-force of nostalgic blends of genres and passion. It’s industrial-grundge; it’s power-nu-metal; it’s even disco-metalcore, why not? This collection of songs serve as a mirror into Ric’s soul, and the fact that he did all the instruments, production and vocals himself is a true testament to this man’s talent.
