Female fronted pop/punk band, You Me And The Harmony, offer a unique sound in the South African alternative landscape. After being named as one of the ‘must-see’ acts at WOODSTOCK SA, we here at The Metalist za set out to discover exactly what we can expect from, or more so, what YMATH have to offer. Read about how their latest single Cliffside developed, what the future holds and how they saved a stray festival-goer.
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.
It’s our pleasure! Thank you for talking to us.
So, when you hear the word Woodstock, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
When we think of Woodstock it reminds us of our first festival experience, which was Woodstock 9 back in 2007! Now we have the honour of playing Woodstock SA and we have never been more excited for a show!
You guys released a new single earlier this year, what can you tell us about the inspiration behind Cliffside?
Well it actually started out as an idea for an intro to our live set, however, the more we worked on it, we realised that it had the potential to become something that we felt could be epic. The more we started to add to it, the more it grew in to what it is today. We really wanted to write an epic song that would captivate the listener in a powerful experience.
Is Cliffside the first of many singles? Or leading to a full length album/continuation of the Contrasting Colours EP? What is your plan going forward in terms of releases?
We are planning to do a few more single releases and another EP in the foreseeable future. We are in the process of writing some new stuff at the moment that we are super excited about!
What kind of reception have you gotten from people who have heard the EP?
We have had a very positive response, people tell us that it’s a breath of fresh air in the South African alternative music scene.
What can people who don’t know you, expect to see/hear from your set at Woodstock SA?
They can expect a female fronted, power pop/pop punk show with a high-energy performance… Perhaps, a few breakdowns thrown in the mix.
What is the funniest or strangest thing you have seen at a festival?
Once we came back from the Stage area at Oppikoppi and found a random shirtless guy passed out in one of our camping chairs, we then adopted him and named him Sebastien. We gave him some water, rubbed ice and sun block on him, after an hour or so he wasn’t looking so good so we took him to the red frogs and that was the last anybody ever heard of Sebastien.
Woodstock SA has a wide range of musical styles that will be showcased, is there anyone outside of your genre that you are keen to see?
Dirty Moonshine! Those guys are awesome, also Carl (YMATH) and Dave (DM) go on Pokémon hunting dates together (Laughing).
Red Helen, they always blow our minds! Man as Machine are always a party! Newtown Knife gang who we get a lot of inspiration from. Aking [also] one of our favourite SA bands.
We are also really looking forward to seeing some new bands!
Thank you again for having us!
See you at Woodstock SA.
