Which words come to mind when you hear the name Rasputin, aka Grigori Rasputin? Self
proclaimed prophet, visionary and most of all mystic. When you google the word Mystic, it
means: a Person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or
absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of
truths that are beyond the intellect. All my life, I have wondered about this mysterious figure
called Rasputin, his life, influences on powerful people and his much speculated death. In other
words, he has always been an eerie, kind of frightening figure to me, and that is exactly the
feelings Chaos Doctrine’s new single FATHER GRIGORI has awakened in me with this new single.
The intro to the song has a powerful feeling of doom, like you are being led to another world, a
world long gone, a mystical, scary and yet at the same time a captivating world. Almost like you
would imagine the type of world Rasputin conjured up in his mind. The trashy, symphonic style
that the rest of the song brings, followed by an excellent solo and mad death metal vocals brings
everything together in the end.
The lyric video, dare I say it, instantly reminded me of a Behemoth music video, which is of course
not a bad thing. The imagery, the atmosphere, the gloom and doom feeling is captured perfectly
with Rasputin being the central figure in all of it. It makes one feel like Chaos Doctrine is breathing
new life into this much disputed “holy man” from a long forgotten era.

Guitarist Alec Surridge adds: “For me, this track has a seriously cool level of anxiety
or stress to it. The riffs are mean, heavy and fast, but at the same time there are
sections that have melody; something that hasn’t been that prevalent in previous
Chaos Doctrine tracks. These are countered by the vocals and the theme of the
lyrics”.
